👋 Hey, welcome to my blog.

I’m Mert, a Data Scientist who loves to do magic with computers. I love coding, sleepless nights, and Turkish coffee. I’m pushing myself to learn more every day. With this blog, I aim to share and reinforce my learnings. Other than technical stuff, I’m a big fan of graphic novels and podcasts. I also love to read about folklore and mythology.

Why I’m Writing?

I don’t want to be a cliché but I strongly believe that one learns better when s/he tries to explain or teach something. In the worst case, you realize that you don’t know enough, then start researching properly. Taking notes is also important to keep the information for the future, considering we can easily forget. More importantly, I like writing and I can’t think of a better reason than this.

Verba volant, scripta manent.

Story of This Blog

May 2018, I was thinking about creating a blog. I did not know about web development, static sites, CSS, and even DNS. I could’ve published a site quickly with WordPress but I was never a fan of it. I was searching for the optimal solution, even considered Django for some time. Thankfully, after some research, I realized that it would be overkill. Then, static sites came to the rescue. Free hosting and private repo provided by GitLab! And the best part is that I’ve been taking notes with markdown already.

I love pain and I write my own CSS.

Everything was ready with existing templates but I chose to play with CSS and created this site from a blank page. It was time-consuming but fun at the same time. Even though I’m not advanced in web-design, yet I learned a lot and it’s more than enough for my needs. You can check out screenshots from earlier builds of this site.

Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication.

Nowadays, the web is crazy. There are pop-ups, ads, adblocker detectors, cookies, confirmation buttons, e-mail subscription buttons, auto-play videos… All we need is cleaner, readable, peaceful pages on the web. Even though this site is not the simpler one, I think I made it pretty decent and readable.
